Spiced Black Treacle Tart
This is very similar to a classic British treacle tart, but is a shortcrust pastry case filled with a mixture of golden syrup and black treacle, flavoured with a little orange zest and chinese five spice.
The pastry was short and crisp, and actually baked well in my oven for once. It wasn't crumbly as it only had a little sugar, but this was just right for the sweet filling. I managed to get my treacle mix to set better than when I tried last time and it has a perfect consistency. The flavour is rich, dark and spicy. I think I would take out a little of the five spice next time as it may be too strong for some, but other than that this is an indulgent dessert for a cold autumn day.
