Week 1, Cakes Showstopper Gateau
My showstopper challenge was a gateau so I made a typical black forest gateau with chocolate sponge, morello cherries soaked in kirsch, whipped cream and dark chocolate decoration.
The cake is very light and moist as it is not made using the standard method, it involves melting chocolate and creating air using whisked egg white. This makes for a better quality cake. I had my first go at decorating an entire cake with frosting, learning the importance of a crumb coating. Then for the decoration I attempted to temper chocolate. This is the first time I have used chocolate for decorative purposes and I think it worked well!
Both the look and taste were how I envisaged so this was definitely a triumph.
